Floating in a Sensory Deprivation Chamber...

January 31, 2019

Hey folks!  Just this last Friday (25 January 2019), I got a life changing experience.  I spent an hour in a chamber that deprived me of my everyday senses...  Let's talk about it!

Enter the Floating Shanti...  My lovely wife Megan got me an hour long session in a float tank as a birthday present., one thing I've been wanting to do for a very long time.  Luckily for me, the Floating Shanti opened up in Fayetteville (a 25 minute drive, but it beats having to drive to Charlotte, 3 hours away to the next closest float location).  She bought the session... And I was so Excited!

So, we get there and the lady inside just lit incense and I was immediately dropped into a "Relaxed Environment."  My shoes went off a the door, where there was a nice little bench to exchange them for cozy sandals.

After sitting for a moment to collect my thoughts and have a nice cold glass of water.  I was given a tour of the place and was told the steps to a successful float.  After the tour, Megan left me to it. and I started the experience.

I went into the room and got into my birthday suite.  Quickly showered to remove all of the product from my hair and body.

I collected my ear plugs and molded them into my ears to form a nice good seal to keep water from going into my ears...

I turned off the light and stepped into the float tank / chamber...  Her'es what's in the water...

The water in the chamber is about 13 inches deep, in that water, they dissolve 2500 pounds of Epsom Salt.  This creates mega-buoyancy in the water, so once you lay down, you float to the surface without any chance of sinking.

The water is set to the same temperature to the surface of your skin, so when you get to floating , it feels as if you are completely weightless.

No... This is not me...  This just shows how well you float in the water...  So, once I was in and comfortable, I reached over to my right and pushed a button...  All the lights in the room faded to black.

Imagine yourself in the  middle of the box above...  Zero Light...  Complete Weightlessness,,,  and the only sound you year is drumming of your heart and the in and out as your lungs expand and contract.

Minute 1-5

I have no idea what I'm doing.here...  Is this just a complete waist of my time??  Did I just blow a vacation day to do something as simple as floating in a tank of water?  How is this worth $75...  I could be working on my greenhouse......  It is really dark in here....  and quiet...

Minute 5-10

I guess this isn't too bad... I definitely need this time to relax... might as well enjoy it...Just breath...

Minute 10-15

This tub isn't very big... why do I feel like I'm slowly spinning clockwise...  that is weird...  I'll put my arms above my head and get a little more comfortable...

Minute 15-20

I'm going to put my arms back down,  I pretty darn relaxed...  (the motion of moving my arms above my head down to the sides of my waist)...  Oh... Shit...  Now I feel like I'm tumbling forward.....  Just relax....

Minute 55

(Startled)  What the hell just happened..  I'm ok..  I'm ok..there are the side walls....  I think I'll just ping pong against the walls until the lights come back up... this thing has to be almost over....

Minute 60...  The light turns back on...

I get up and out of the chamber, take another shower to wash off all the salt and lazily walk to the lobby...

Both my Wife and rep was asking about my float... I explained what happened and then realized... There was about a 25-30 minute section of the float I can't recall...  I was not asleep / surely wasn't dead / but definitely not aware...  of anything...  I just experienced nothing for the first time in my life...

I felt totally refreshed and hyper vigilant... My senses that were deprived... Had come back...
